Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll And Mr. Hyde Review

This was another classic book, like the Phantom of the Opera, that I had heard a lot about but never actually sat down and read. It is a pretty quick read, well written, and fairly disturbing...although maybe not by today's standards.

Most of the story is told from the viewpoint of Mr. Utterson, a lawyer who is a friend of Dr. Jekyll's and who observes Dr. Jekyll's strangeness from an outside perspective. Mr. Utterson has some experience bumping into Mr. Hyde as well and finds Mr. Hyde a most disturbing character. Most people know the premise behind the story, so the surprise twist at the ending isn't really a surprise. Basically Mr. Utterson tells you about Dr. Jekyll and how Dr. Jekyll's life is intertwined with the disturbing Mr. Hyde. Things culminate when Mr. Utterson receives a journal of Dr. Jekyll's that explains Dr. Jekyll's experiment in full.

This is a dark, mysterious read. If would have been full of suspense had I not already known the story. From Mr. Utterson's point of view the things that happen to Dr. Jekyll and involving Mr. Hyde are disturbing and upsetting. It isn't until you read Dr. Jekyll's journal, at the end of the book, detailing his experiments that things get very creepy and a bit spooky.

As a chemist I have to say that the chemistry described in the book and it's affect on Dr. Jekyll is ridiculous. I realize this is a work of fiction however and choose to ignore that, although I had to mention it.

Stevenson's writing is very readable; and the mystery and gloominess pervading the story is distinct. The story is very engaging and I found myself hard-pressed to put the novel down. At times the language is dated and a bit wordy, but I expected that.

Overall I am happy that I read this. It was nice to get the full version of the story and see what all following works were based on. It is a good piece of literature and an enjoyable read. Dr. Jekyll's journal at the end brings up some deeper questions about duplicity of personalities and the good and evil that dwells in all humans; so from that aspect it also gives the reader some food for thought.

Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll And Mr. Hyde Overview

Tor Classics are affordably-priced editions designed to attract the young reader. Original dynamic cover art enthusiastically represents the excitement of each story. Appropriate "reader friendly" type sizes have been chosen for each title--offering clear, accurate, and readable text. All editions are complete and unabridged, and feature Introductions and Afterwords.

This edition of Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde includes an Introduction and Afterword by Charles L. Grant.

British lawyer Mr. Utterson had proof. Hyde was a foul, twisted, shrunken creature who had brutally stomped a little girl and beaten an old man to death--for no reason. Hyde left a trail of evil across London; the mere sight of him made stranger violent with fear and disgust...

But Hyde was Dr. Jekyll's sole heir.

And that made no sense at all. Henry Jekyll was the kindest, most civil, most respected man in England. What power could a monster like Hyde hold over Jekyll's soul? Utterson vowed to solve the mystery, and free his friend from Hyde's clutches...until his hunt led to a horror beyond blackmail, beyond extortion; to a secret so shocking, so sickening, so personal--That the sheer terror of the truth could drive men mad...

Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll And Mr. Hyde Specifications

The young Robert Louis Stevenson suffered from repeated nightmares of living a double life, in which by day he worked as a respectable doctor and by night he roamed the back alleys of old-town Edinburgh. In three days of furious writing, he produced a story about his dream existence. His wife found it too gruesome, so he promptly burned the manuscript. In another three days, he wrote it again. "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" was published as a "shilling shocker" in 1886, and became an instant classic. In the first six months 40,000 copies were sold. Queen Victoria read it. Sermons and editorials were written about it. When Stevenson and his family visited America a year later, they were mobbed by reporters at the dock in New York City. Compulsively readable from its opening pages, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is still one of the best tales ever written about the divided self.

Worth the read - Lindsay Barker - Minnesota USA
I always thought I knew this story just because the idea of having a dual personality is an idea with which a lot of us can relate. I knew that the story was about a doctor who made some potion of sorts that turned him into an unscrupulous man. But there were several things that I learned from taking the short amount of time to read this story. I did not know that the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was being told in the aftermath of the confusion of it all. I discovered that there were deep of emotions and grief tied to Dr. Jekyll's decisions and actions. I also learned that Hyde was the complete picture of the devil on our shoulder. So for knowing what the book was about, I was missing key pieces that I found delighting to discover while reading it for myself. I would recommend it. I have the Cricket House Books publication of it myself. The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde It is compact and was easy to carry along in my purse.

Amazing Classical Read. - J Bennington - Indiana
Wow! What an awesome book. This classic thriller/mystery was such a gripping tale of duplicity. I couldn't put it down once I started reading. It wasn't what I imagined it to be, but after filtering all the 1880's lingo, I was spell bound the minute Mr. Utterson stepped on the scene of Dr. Jekyll's front door. I would highly recommend this to anyone over the age of 13. This short novel didn't waste a single word. It was filled with beautiful prose, realistic dialogue (for it's time) and quite a thrilling plot and twist.
The brilliance comes through in such passages as,,, "First, because I have been made to learn that the doom and burden of our life is bound for ever on man's shoulders, and when the attempt is made to cast it off, it but returns upon us with more unfamiliar and awful pressure..." found near the end - near the end of the author's own life. Somehow that makes this book more meaningful and its theme more powerful...5 Stars!

Killing the Giants
The Rumblin: A Short Story

A story everyone references... - Stephen Tessitore - Florida, USA
...But most people have probably not read. At least for me, it was brand new. I've seen the movies with the effect of the Hyde potion (the crackling, morphing, turn to a gigantic character). The book was a lot more subtle, and if we didn't all know the story to some extent, would have been a great mystery. It's also seen through the eyes of a friend of Dr. Jekyl's, which makes the story entertaining as he unravels the causes of Jekyl's strange behavior. I would reccomend the book to anyone who hasn't read it and wants to be able to say they did! And, anyone who wants to expand their Old English vocabulary to give their Kindle's lookup tool some excercise.

How to Live on 24 Hours a Day Review

This book was recommended as a 'must read' in Dale Carnegie's 'How to develop self-confidence and influence people be public speaking' which I had picked up for a group presentation.

I immediately downloaded it onto my kindle. It is a short book. I read it about an hour and a half, and I am a slow reader.

The author is British and the book was written in 1905. So by modern standards the advice it contains may seem a little harsh and paternalistic and the language somewhat stilted. But I really enjoyed the presentation compared to many modern politically correct but stylisticaly banal works. The humor is subtle but effective. The arguments are witty and thought-provoking and ultimately persuasive.

He begins with urging us to review our day and set aside time from outside our work hours, that we often waste by doing nothing, to do something truly worthwile. He recommends literature and the arts for building self and character but acknowledges that if one truly has no inclination towards these areas then they could do whatever else they enjoy that is interesting and mentally stimulating.

Besides the activity itself, though, he urges mental discipline and reflection. He stresses that the path to self-development is difficult and requires hard work and persistence. He warns against taking on too much to start with since that could result in failure and lowered self-esteem. He also cautions against going down the path only to become an insufferable prig looking down on everyone else.

While these are some of the bare-bones points he talks about, it is his language and style that makes the book such an enjoyable and inspiring read.

Recommended.

How to Live on 24 Hours a Day Overview

This preface, though placed at the beginning, as a preface must be, should be read at the end of the book. I have received a large amount of correspondence concerning this small work, and many reviews of it--some of them nearly as long as the book itself--have been printed. But scarcely any of the comment has been adverse. Some people have objected to a frivolity of tone; but as the tone is not, in my opinion, at all frivolous, this objection did not impress me; and had no weightier reproach been put forward I might almost have been persuaded that the volume was flawless! A more serious stricture has, however, been offered--not in the press, but by sundry obviously sincere correspondents- -and I must deal with it. A reference to page 43 will show that I anticipated and feared this disapprobation. The sentence against which protests have been made is as follows:-- "In the majority of instances he [the typical man] does not precisely feel a passion for his business; at best he does not dislike it. He begins his business functions with some reluctance, as late as he can, and he ends them with joy, as early as he can. And his engines, while he is engaged in his business, are seldom at their full 'h.p.'"

Time management was the same struggle 90 years ago - Sunny -
The author has a authoritative style that preempts your rationalizing why it won't work. This style is very pleasant and you can feel that the author truely desires that the reader finds improvement and a better life.

It is fun to read that people 90 years ago had the same thoughts and struggles as we do today.

Every hour is brand new - Caballero - Virginia
I was attracted to this book because it is short. I'm one of those "No time for anything!" kind of guys. But this book changed my opinion on time mangement. I used to be constantly disappointed in my failure to keep to a strict schedule. Read the book and find out why I'm now much more relaxed and efficient.

Feeling taken...a waste of money. - Sam G. - Cleveland, OH
You are basically told to view your allotted 24 hours a day as the number of hours that exist outside of your job, and to spend them doing something that will engage you. Many references to literature. And the author is English, so be prepared to read words like "programme" versus "job". Following his use of words and trying to determine the American equivalent was interesting...especially if you've not encountered this before.

There are no tips or hints as to how to "save time" doing this instead of that - or doing it differently - for example: clean a room in your house each day and by the end of the week, you won't need to spend a day of your weekend cleaning. I was hoping for these types of time-savers - but unfortunately did not see that this was not that type of book. At best, he tells you to use your commute time on the train to work each day, and back, to reflect on who you are, where you are headed and what makes you happy. He recommends not wasting that particular lot of time reading the paper - althought he recommends you still fit that in during the day - just not during your commute?? He focuses on starting with 7+ hours of the week and using them for something that will - again - engage you.

Some valid points. A very short read. However, save your money and locate this book at your local library if you truly wish to read it.

The Freedom Writers Diary : How a Teacher and 150 Teens Used Writing to Change Themselves and the World Around Them Review

What Erin Gruwell does for these students is give them a hope they never thought they would have or deserved to have. You will find this book to be brutally honest as Erin encouraged each of these students who were torn apart by families, race, color, and social status to each keep a diary.

The result of what you find in this book is extremely real and honest as these students bare their souls as to what their lives are truly like, their deepest fears, their hopes, and their dreams.

I highly recommend this read. While parts are hard to read, I think it is important that we see experience what the honest truth of these students situations were, and the power of one person making a difference.

If you are concerned that the book may be too graphic, I would recommend the movie.

The Freedom Writers Diary : How a Teacher and 150 Teens Used Writing to Change Themselves and the World Around Them Overview

Straight from the front line of urban America, the inspiring story of one fiercely determined teacher and her remarkable students.

As an idealistic twenty-three-year-old English teacher at Wilson High School in Long beach, California, Erin Gruwell confronted a room of “unteachable, at-risk” students. One day she intercepted a note with an ugly racial caricature, and angrily declared that this was precisely the sort of thing that led to the Holocaust—only to be met by uncomprehending looks. So she and her students, using the treasured books Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl and Zlata’s Diary: A Child’s Life in Sarajevo as their guides, undertook a life-changing, eye-opening, spirit-raising odyssey against intolerance and misunderstanding. They learned to see the parallels in these books to their own lives, recording their thoughts and feelings in diaries and dubbing themselves the “Freedom Writers” in homage to the civil rights activists “The Freedom Riders.”

With funds raised by a “Read-a-thon for Tolerance,” they arranged for Miep Gies, the courageous Dutch woman who sheltered the Frank family, to visit them in California, where she declared that Erin Gruwell’s students were “the real heroes.” Their efforts have paid off spectacularly, both in terms of recognition—appearances on “Prime Time Live” and “All Things Considered,” coverage in People magazine, a meeting with U.S. Secretary of Education Richard Riley—and educationally. All 150 Freedom Writers have graduated from high school and are now attending college.

With powerful entries from the students’ own diaries and a narrative text by Erin Gruwell, The Freedom Writers Diary is an uplifting, unforgettable example of how hard work, courage, and the spirit of determination changed the lives of a teacher and her students.

The authors’ proceeds from this book will be donated to The Tolerance Education Foundation, an organization set up to pay for the Freedom Writers’ college tuition. Erin Gruwell is now a visiting professor at California State University, Long Beach, where some of her students are Freedom Writers.

Great Book - Dawn H. -
So far, this book is a real and honest portrayal of what teens (and teachers) experience in their lives, that many of us simply are unaware of. I will be reading this with my students as part of a program to foster compassion, acceptance, and tolerance. Has some adult content.

Freedome Writers Diary - dogwalker -
Freedom Writers Diary is a literature selection that all high school instructors and high school students should read. The reader learns that if you believe and have the desire to achieve success it will happen.

R Rated - Cyndrome -
My fourteen year old daughter was given this book for a writing assignment over the summer. I was familiar with this book from the movie so I thought what a wonderful story. It was time for her to see life from a different perspective.

When the book arrived I scanned it and was appauld at the raw language and sexual content.

My issue is with her school who assigned such a book at her age level. If it were a movie based on the diary entries it would have been rated R. If she can't get in to see an R rated movie at 14 she should not be permitted to read it either.

School states it is mandatory, so I edited it. Parents beware of what schools are requiring your student to read. Cyndrome

The Science of Getting Rich Review

The Science of Getting Rich and The Science of Being Great are of my favorite personal development books. Wallace Wattles' words are profoundly spot on! Many others agree. As one reads Wattles' words, they can hear the voices of several prominent self-help gurus quoting his philosophies.

These books from the early 1900's are of the clearest an most concise truths I have ever read on the subjects. If you want to get to the source of The Secret and other law of attraction type teaching, and get to the heart of what it takes to become "great", I suggest you begin with this collection. But you will receive much more. His philosophy is at the essence of how we can attain real fulfillment and inner-peace doing what we love.

This book contains the original text from Wattles, so you will be getting his full and undiluted message.

Tom Butler-Bowdon's introduction is also spot on. He seems to have Wattles' philosophy in his bones. Because of Bowdon's vast experience with self-development books (see all his "Classics" books), he effectively summarizes and accents many of Wattles' important key points, setting up the reader for what they are about to receive.

From Bowdon's introduction, "...this is the strange paradox of the Science of Getting Rich: it was written by a socialist. Yet perhaps his blend of socialist vision and money-making is not so incongruent after all. In our time, when lightly regulated capitalism in the financial world has been blamed for much misery, Wattles' ideas can be seen in a new light. His vision of people expressing their gifts and being rewarded for it, with everyone finding their place in the economy as a valued member, now looks enlightened."

These books, The Science of Getting Rich, and The Science of Being Great are must reads for those on the path of personal development and committed to making the most of one's life, and this version is definitely the best.

The Science of Getting Rich Overview

As featured in the bestselling book The Secret, here is the landmark guide to wealth creation republished with the classic essay "How to Get What You Want."

Wallace D. Wattles spent a lifetime considering the laws of success as he found them in the work of the world's great philosophers. He then turned his life effort into this simple, slender book - a volume that he vowed could replace libraries of philosophy, spirituality, and self-help for the purpose of attaining one definite goal: a life of prosperity.

Wattles describes a definite science of wealth attraction, built on the foundation of one commanding idea: "There is a thinking stuff from which all things are made...A thought, in this substance, produces the thing that is imaged by the thought."

In his seventeen short, straight-to-the-point chapters, Wattles shows how to use this idea, how to overcome barriers to its application, and how work with very direct methods that awaken it in your life. He further explains how creation and not competition is the hidden key to wealth attraction, and how your power to get rich uplifts everyone around you.

The Science of Getting Rich concludes with Wattle's rare essay "How to Get Want You Want" - a brilliant refresher of his laws of wealth creation.

Waist of time - J - USA
This was one of the worst books ive read in a long time. The author took an idea and put so much puffery on it that you lost your train of thought on were he was going. Then he kept repeating himself over and over. It felt like i was listening to an old man ramble about the same thing for an hour and go knowhere. It felt as if each chapter he would forgot were he was taking the story so he had to repeat it. This book could have been said in one page. It was a waist of time.

BAM! - Jerry -
It was written 100 years ago, so the termonology is dated, however it is still very easy to understand even for us Americanas. You aren't going to be "spoon fed", or offered blank spaces in the book to write your goals down, no tapping, no meditation - thankfully it's not a modern self help book.

W.D.W. presents to us the science of getting rich in the most practical way possible: .."There is a science to getting rich and it is an exact science"...he will explain how, and if you do exactly what this book says you will get rich with mathematical certainty. I speak from experience. Need I say more?

Check Out Dante's Inferno (Bloom's Notes)

Dante's Inferno (Bloom's Notes) Review

It is nice to have a more recent translation of a classic work. Often classical works are difficult to understand because even though in English, they are written in forms and modes that are "out of fashion" or not easily understandable to younger generations from lack of exposure. This version is easy to read and understand. The poetry is beautiful. I just think this project is exciting and it is so nice to see a compilation of work that includes so many contemporary poets.

Dante's Inferno (Bloom's Notes) Overview

A new telling of Dante’s Inferno, this translation is the most fluent, grippingly readable version of the famous poem yet, and—with all the consummate technical skill that is the hallmark of Sean O’Brien’s own poetry—manages the near-impossible task of preserving the subtle power and lyric nuance of the Italian original, while seeking out an entirely natural English music. No other version has so vividly expressed the horror, cruelty, beauty, and outrageous imaginative flight of Dante’s original vision.

Morning Star (New Method Supplementary Readers) Review

I had never read any of Haggard's work and I was expecting slow, nineteenth century, convoluted prose.
I was greatly surprised to see the straightforward writing, and the incredibly evocative picture Morning Star paints of ancient Egypt.
This is a love story, but not a sloppy, gushy one. The narrative is interesting from start to finish. So far Morning Star has stood the test of time, and I think it will for a number of centuries -- as long as there are people interested in Egypt, or people who like historical novels, or people who simply enjoy good, evocative writing.
It definitely deserves 5 stars, a rating I haven't given very often if at all in these Amazon.com reviews.
Read it. You won't be disappointed.Morning Star

The Ultimate French Verb Review and Practice (UItimate Review & Reference Series) Review

Some of the colloquial phrases (vous autres) specifically, are not clearly listed as French or French-canadian. I am brushing up on my French since my best friend is moving there and marrying a Frenchman and he said he had never heard someone in France use vous autres (He is from Normandy, lives in Toulouse). Upon some investigation this is a French-canadian thing. If that kind of thing had been noted, I'd give this 5 stars. As it is, it makes me less confident to use the more colloquial options the book teaches.

That said, the bulk of the book is great. The layout of the book is wonderful with sufficient space to actually do the exercises in the book. This is great for independent home usage since I like to be able to go back and review later. The exercises themselves are well-planned. The verbs are defined in groups with similarity of (prendre, apprendre, comprendre) and/or endings (-er verbs). I really like how there are explanations of connections which I might not have noticed on my own. Like how the endings for some irregular -ir verbs are just the singular endings for -er verbs. Ok, I know those already! These types of connections make this book worth more than just memorizing verb conjugations.

I do find it is helpful to have a dictionary handy, since many of the exercises are given where you need to make whole sentences and not all of the other words are defined. At my level though, looking up a couple words per page is actually a benefit, but if you were an early French learner, it might be tough since they do not translate all of the sentences.

A little messy - janine -
It's a great book, and easy enough for me because I studied french and just wanted to brush up. But I think for someone who hasn't taken 8 years of french, the book might be a little all over the place. Maybe not, its different for everyone.

More than a verb review book - Petit Prince -
Out of all the French language study books that I have, I think that this one is the most useful. I'm not a newbie to French and for me the thing that I have the hardest time unraveling is all of the verb tenses. That is because once you get a decent amount of French vocabulary and grammar under your belt, that stays relatively static in the language and it is the verbs that become the key to being able to understand and express yourself in the language.

perfect - holly - Minneapolis, MN
I bought this for my francofile husband who is extremely particular - he loved it. It is the perfect book for someone who already has basic french language skills and needs to learn more about conjugation and vocabulary.

The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin-Complete Summary & Analysis Overview

I should have no objection to go over the same life from its beginning to the end: requesting only the advantage authors have, of correcting in a second edition the faults of the first.
